The ADOS-2 is the gold standard for autism testing. It can be used to test almost anyone ages 1 through adulthood, regardless of language ability. The ADOS-2 looks at a person's social skills, communication skills, and restricted and repetitive behaviors.
For a person to be a candidate for ADOS-2 testing, they should have no significant sensory impairments such as blindness, deafness, or challenged mobility. The examiner will conduct a pre-test interview to collect a thorough developmental history of the individual. The test itself typically takes between 45-90 minutes. During the test, the examiner will lead the individual through a series of tasks and conversations in order to assess the individual's social and communication skills, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors. The test will be scored and an evaluation will be written. The evaluation will include a summary of the test and its results, diagnostic impressions referencing the DSM-5 criteria for autism, and treatment recommendations. The evaluation can then be taken to a diagnosing provider (pediatrician, psychiatrist, licensed clinical social worker, etc.) to be used in their comprehensive evaluation for a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
