Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule- Second Edition

The ADOS-2 is the gold standard for autism testing. It can be used to test almost anyone ages 1 through adulthood, regardless of language ability. The ADOS-2 looks at a person's social skills, communication skills, and restricted and repetitive behaviors.

For a person to be a candidate for ADOS-2 testing, they should have no significant sensory  impairments such as blindness, deafness, or challenged mobility. The examiner will conduct a pre-test interview to collect a thorough developmental history of the individual. The test itself typically takes between 45-90 minutes. During the test, the examiner will lead the individual through a series of tasks and conversations in order to assess the individual's social and communication skills, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors. The test will be scored and a report will be written. The report will include a summary of the test and its results, diagnostic impressions referencing the DSM-5 criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder, and treatment recommendations. The  report  can then be taken to a diagnosing provider (pediatrician, psychiatrist, licensed clinical social worker, etc.) to be used in their comprehensive evaluation for determination of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
